About ABA

What is ABA?

A plain-language look at Applied Behaviour Analysis — how it works, and how we use it to help children and youth build the skills that matter to your family.

The approach

A scientific approach to behaviour.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding behaviour — a set of principles focused on how to promote positive behaviour change.

ABA interventions are applied systematically to help individuals learn new skills: communication, self-advocacy, self-regulation, social skills — or any skill that enhances their quality of life.

Data driven

The effectiveness of intervention methods is decided based on data collected. Depending on that data — with input from you as the parent — the clinical supervisor may choose to continue with an intervention or change it, so the plan keeps producing positive outcomes for your child.

"If children don't learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn."

Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas — pioneer of Applied Behaviour Analysis
How it helps

CAPAX provides ABA-based assessments and intervention that:

Increase behaviours

Increase the frequency or reliability of helpful behaviours, such as communication and independence.

Teach new skills

Teach your child new skills such as emotion regulation, managing disappointment, cooperation, and friendship skills.

Maintain behaviours

Maintain behaviours such as listening and responding to certain instructions, so gains last over time.

Reduce behaviours

Reduce interfering or challenging behaviours that get in the way of learning and family life.

Understanding the role

What your therapy team does — and doesn't do.

Your therapy team does

  • Delivers evidence-based therapy grounded in Applied Behaviour Analysis
  • Works on individualized goals — communication, social, adaptive, and vocational skills
  • Follows a clinically supervised treatment plan developed by a Behaviour Analyst
  • Collects data to track progress and inform decisions
  • Uses play and motivating activities with a clear therapeutic purpose
  • Provides direct teaching, prompting, and reinforcement of skills
  • Supports generalization of skills across people, settings, and situations
  • Involves caregivers through collaboration, coaching, and regular communication
  • Maintains professional and ethical standards at all times
  • Prioritizes safety and well-being during all sessions

Your therapy team doesn't

  • Provide respite care
  • Run sessions without clear therapeutic goals or data collection
  • Fill time with activities that are not clinically meaningful
  • Work independently without caregiver involvement
  • Provide unstructured play without a learning objective
  • Take on responsibilities outside their clinical scope
  • Deliver services that are open-ended without defined outcomes

Our commitment

  • Goal-oriented
  • Evidence-based
  • Collaborative
  • Focused on building independence and meaningful skills

An important note for caregivers:

Caregiver involvement is an essential part of ensuring that the skills learned in therapy are meaningful and sustainable in everyday life.
